Nidji is a band from Jakarta, Indonesia. Formed in 2002, Nidji's name comes from the Japanese word niji, meaning 'rainbow'. Their music can be classified under alternative pop genre, and the band has cited Coldplay and The Killers as major influences.. The band consists of Giring (vocalist), Andro (bassist), Run-D (keyboardist), Rama (guitarist), Ariel (guitarist), and Adri (drummer). They have released six singles so far including "Child", "Sudah", "Hapus Aku", "Kau dan Aku", "Disco Lazy Time" & "Biarlah". Two of their singles, Heaven from Breakthru' album and then Shadow taken from Top Up album were used as background music in South-East Asian season promos for the popular television series Heroes, and they provided soundtrack music for the acclaimed Indonesian film Laskar pelangi.

Their album, "Breakhtru'" was released in 2006 with an English language version released the following year. The second, "Top Up", was released in 2007.
History

Nidiji was initially formed in February 2002. The beginnings of Nidji came about through the friendship between Rama and Andro. Eventually with Ariel, who had joined the two, they wrote a song entitled "Maria". However, "Maria" was not yet complete and still needed vocals. After Giring met with them he was able to complete "Maria" by giving it some vocals.
Afterwards, Andro recommended Adri who had often done jam sessions with him to fill the position of drummer. The four of them together (Ariel, Andro, Adri, and Giring) then invited Rama to join. At the beginning of April 2005, Nidji added another member so that the band totaled six musicians. This was a keyboardist named Randy who was also a close friend of Giring.

Dewa 19, often referred to as Dewa, is an Indonesian rock band originating from Surabaya, East Java.

Since the band's formation in 1986 there have been a number of changes to the lineup. The current members are: Ahmad Dhani (keyboard), Andra (guitar), Tyo (drums), Yuke (bass guitar), and Once (vocals).

History
Beginnings

Dewa was first formed in 1986 by four students from a junior high school SMPN 6 in Surabaya. The name Dewa originated as an acronym of the founding members' names: D from Dhani (keyboard, vocals), E from Erwin Prasetya (bass guitar), W from Wawan Juniarso (drums) and A from Andra (guitar). Dewa is also an Indonesian word meaning 'god', or 'deity'. The band was initially based at Wawan's dorm in the Airlangga University complex.

Wanting to take a different direction, Wawan left the band in 1988 and formed Outsider with Ari Lasso. The name Dewa was changed to Down Beat which became a reasonably well-known name in East Java during that time.

When Slank became well-known, Wawan was asked to rejoin Dewa to rejuvenate the band and Ari Lasso was invited too. As the age of the bands members was 19 years at the time, Down Beat was changed to Dewa 19. Due to the lack of a studio that met their requirements in Surabaya, the band was forced was move to Jakarta where after a number of rejections by record companies, a Dewa 19 master was finally recorded by Team Records.
Mainstream success and line-up instability

The first album Dewa 19 was released in 1992. Exceeding expectations, the album received awards from BASF in the categories of Best Newcomer and Most Popular Album of 1993.

During the making of the second album Format Masa Depan which was released in 1994, Wawan left the band again due to incompatibility between the members. After their 1995 album Terbaik-Terbaik which enjoyed sales of more than half a million units was completed, Wong Aksan joined the band as drummer. Wong departed too after the following album Pandawa Lima was finished in 1997 and was replaced by Bimo Sulaksono, a former member of Netral. Not long thereafter Bimo left Dewa 19 and together with Bebi formed the band Romeo.

In addition to the problem of frequent changes to the lineup, Dewa 19 also suffered from the implications of the alleged drug problems of two other band members. Erwin entered a rehabilitation program to end a drug dependency which was ultimately successful. Ari Lasso also experienced difficulties and Dhani insisted that the vocalist role be filled by Once. The vacant drummer's seat was filled by Tyo Nugros.

In their fifth album Bintang Lima released in 2000, the band changed their name from Dewa 19 back to Dewa. Bintang Lima was a hit, selling over 1.7 million copies[citation needed]. Erwin returned to the band as bass guitar player.

After the 2002 release of the popular album Cintailah Cinta, a number of problems emerged. The song "Arjuna Mencari Cinta" was plagued by copyright issues and eventually the band was forced to change the name to "Arjuna" only. Erwin left due to differences with the band's management and was replaced by Yuke Sampurna, formerly the The Groove bassist.

In 2004 Dewa released a live album entitled Atas Nama Cinta I & II followed by the studio album Laskar Cinta. In the same year Dewa changed its name to Dewa 19 again.

In 2006 the eighth studio album Republik Cinta was released. The album has spawned three radio hit singles: "Laskar Cinta", "Selimut Hati" and "Sedang Ingin Bercinta".

In this year, Dewa 19 back to lost one personnel, Tyo Nugros. Tyo out after he had a vacuum of Gods activity due to illness on his legs that required can not play drums for a long time.
Side Project

Now, Dewa members have their own side project. Dhani now also playing for The Rock, Andra playing guitar for his own Andra and The BackBone, and also Once develops his career as a solo singer.

Peterpan is a multi-award winning Indonesian pop rock band currently consisting of Ariel, Ukie, Loekman and Reza. They are well known for their simple lyrics, catchy beats and Ariel's voice[1]

History

The group started in 1997 when keyboardist Andika (Andika Naliputra Wirahardja) formed a school band called Topi in Bandung, together with guitarist Uki (Mohammad Kautsar Hikmat), vocalist Ariel (Nazril Irham), bass player Abel and drummer Ari. They mainly played Brit Alternative until Ari withdrew from the group and marked the end of Topi.

Andika started to regroup the former members of Topi in 2000. The drummer was replaced by Reza (Ilsyah Ryan Reza), a college student from Palu. Loekman (Loekman Hakim), Indra's elder brother's friend, also joined them as their lead guitarist, which added a sense of matureness and enriched the melody in their songs to complete the band.

Andika then suggested Peterpan as the name for the band, Peter Pan referring to the character first created by author J.M. Barrie which according to Andika was their first choice among others such as Mickey Mouse, Spiderman, X-Men etc. After the name was chosen, Peterpan was formally founded on September 1, 2000.

On 2001, Peterpan played their music on Bandung streets, from one cafe to another with a vision of becoming a home band in one of Bandung's famous cafes. Peterpan often played top 40 songs, rock songs (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, U2, Creed, etc) at O'Hara and Sapu Lidi (Indonesian for broomstick) cafe. It was in Sapu Lidi Cafe that the band was spotted by Noey, a producer who planned to release a compilation album.

Subsequently, Peterpan sent 3 demo songs: "Sahabat" (Best Friend), "Mimpi yang Sempurna" (A Perfect Dream), and "Taman Langit" (Sky Garden). "Mimpi yang Sempurna" was chosen as one of the songs to be included in a compilation album titled Kisah 2002 Malam (The Story of 2002 Nights). The album was commercially successful and surprisingly it was "Mimpi yang Sempurna" that came out as the best song in this album boosting the sales up too 150,000 copies. It is a considerable achievement for a compilation album in Indonesia. "Mimpi yang Sempurna" was given heavy rotation on Indonesian Radio and became well known, making the song frequently performed by street musicians.

Musica, Indonesia's top major label offered a contract to Peterpan and in June 2003 their debut album titled Taman Langit was released. The band members' individual taste in music is evident in the lyrics and music. Ariel's vocal strength and Peterpan's simple lyrics were noted as Peterpan's main musical strengths.

Afterwards, Peterpan released their second album titled Bintang Di Surga (A Star in Heaven) in August 2004. In its second week of release, Bintang di Surga reached 350,000 sales. From this point, Peterpan achieved commercial success. By the end of 2005, the second album sales had reached 2.7 million copies, a large number in Indonesia's recently slow economy.

Recognising their success in the music industry, Peterpan received three SCTV awards, one in 2004 and two in 2005. They also received MTV Asia Awards for Indonesian Favourite Artist in Bangkok on May 9 2005. In the Indonesian AMI awards 2005, Peterpan received the award of "Best Pop Alternative Band" with the song "Kukatakan Dengan Indah" (I Say It Beautifully).

After the second album, on September 18, 2005 Peterpan released an album as the original soundtrack for the Rexinema movie, Alexandria. The album was titled Menunggu Pagi (Waiting for Dawn) and the formal release was covered simultaneously by Indonesia's six top National TV stations. The soundtrack album includes five new songs for the film and renditions of five of their old songs from Bintang Di Surga.

Peterpan also collaborated with Chrisye in the song "Menunggumu" (Waiting For You). The song was then used as the theme song for the Indonesian soap opera Liontin, series 1 and 2.

On November 4, 2006, Peterpan held a conference to formally announce the exit of two of their members, Andika Naliputra Wirahardja and Indra. Both left Peterpan due to a musical differences. According to Ariel, there were problems since the making of their first album, Taman Langit. The break up came at a difficult time for Indra as he had lost his child just before the break up. Both Andika and Indra claimed that they have settled the royalty matter with Peterpan and have officially left Peterpan since October 8, 2006. Now, Andika and Indra are members of a new band, named The Titans. The band is recording under EMI Music Indonesia, an international record company. With their brand new self-titled album and first single "Rasa Ini" (This Feeling), The Titans have established themselves in Indonesia's music scene.

In early 2008 it was announced that Peterpan will be changing their name. Their 2008 album, Sebuah Nama Sebuah Cerita, is stated to be their last studio album using the name Peterpan. The album itself is comprised mostly of popular hits from their eight years as Peterpan but includes three new songs; "Walau Habis Terang", "Kisah Cintaku" and "Dilema Besar". A last concert was also held on October 20, 2008 to celebrate both their last Peterpan album and their last official use of the name.
Personal life

Ariel married Sarah Amelia. The couple has a daughter named Allea Ananta.

They divorced in 2008 and Ariel is allegedly dating Luna Maya, an Indonesian model and actress who Ariel dated before news of Sarah's pregnancy broke.
Making a record

Amidst their tight schedule in 2003-2004, which climaxed on July 18, 2004, Peterpan planned a seemingly impossible mission of performing in six different cities in Indonesia just a period of 24 hours.[1] The concerts were titled Konser Breaking Record and listed in Museum Rekor Indonesia (MURI, Indonesian Museum of Record), includes concerts in 2 Indonesian major islands: Sumatra and Java. The concerts started on July 18 in Medan North Sumatra Province, Padang, Pekanbaru, Lampung, Semarang Central Java Province, and finally ended at Surabaya Eastern Java Province.
Allegations of plagiarism

The band's popular song "Tak Bisakah" was allegedly plagiarised by the Indian music director Pritam for the movie Woh Lamhe to be used in the song "Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai". The song went on to become a major hit in 2006 in India, and it soon surfaced that the tune of the song was partly copied from Peterpan's original "Tak Bisakah". Although there have been many claims of plagiarism by many musicians and fans of Peterpan, and that Peterpan had made the original version, it is still not clear whether Peterpan was compensated, or whether Pritam bought the rights. Both songs were eventually sung by Peterpan and Abhijeet sequentially in the first Asian Idol in 2007.

Another popular song "Di Belakangku" was also allegedly plagiarised by Pritam for the movie Jab We Met to be used in the song "Aao Milo Chale". It is uncertain whether legal action has been taken by the group against the Indian composer.[citation needed]

Slank is an Indonesian rock band. It was founded in 1983 by some teenagers in a small street in Jakarta called Gang Potlot. They had played rock music everywhere until they got an opportunity to make an album.

Early years

Formed in Jakarta in 1983, Slank—the group's initial lineup was Kaka (vocals), Pay (guitars), Bongky Marcel (bass), Indra Qadarish (keyboards), and Bimbim (drums) -- would play their trade for a number of years before finally landing a deal and releasing their first album, Suit suit...hehehe, in 1990. From there, more albums, most of them commercially successful, followed, but Slank was plagued by a number of defections, some involving personal issues, others having to do with internal tensions based around creative decisions. The negativity was overcome, and over the next 20 years, Slank was able to increase their profile, touring the world and maintaining a high commercial value. In 2007, Slank released album number 20, Slow But Sure.[1]

(1991) was an enormous hit. Their subsequent success inspired the formation of other bands, such as Dewa.

Their first three albums, awarded by BASF Indonesia as The Best Selling Albums on BASF tapes and the fourth album Generasi Biru went multi-platinum, with several songs making in into Indonesia's top charts.

Slank became the first MTV Indonesia icon in 2005.[2]
Various Changes

Since its inception, Slank's band members have changed frequently. Reasons have ranged from drugs uses, woman, money and differences in musical styles. The most popular line up of the band has been Kaka (vocals), Bimbim (Drum), Abdee (Guitars), Ivanka (Basses), Ridho (Guitars). In 2007, Slank released the new album, "Slow But Sure"; the album's first single "Slalu Begitu" is currently receiving heavy rotation on Indonesian radio stations.

In 2008 Slank has been touring the U.S. and Europe. They have also played in various Asian countries, such as Thailand, the Philippines, Japan and South Korea.

Having more than fifteen albums sold and occasionally causing political controversy in Indonesia, Slank decided to travel to the USA to record their first English-speaking album, Anthem for the Broken-Hearted. Blues Saraceno is chosen to be their producer of this album. They record and mixed the album in only twenty-two days.[3]

“If you want the world to see what you want to say, you better go to the highest mountain. And for music, the highest mountain now is in the U.S.A.”, says Abdee Negara [4]

Java Jazz Festival 2009

This is one of the big headlines. For the first time, the Indonesian phenomenon with millions of fans, Slank, rocked this year’s Java Jazz Festival 2009! Who could predicted that Slank would have their moment at the biggest jazz event in the world.

Their performance was meant to be a task from Peter F.Gontha to see how they deserved being in a jazz festival, the whole show that attends by thousands successfully transformed their songs into jazz. In the spirit of reaching greater jazz audience by combining genres, this show which featured Michael Paulo, Ron King and Tony Monaco was really a feels like a lifetime experience.[5]
Slankers

For more than two decades, Slank has managed a healthy attitude towards their music career, which in turn has helped them throughout the years. Slank has also gained somewhat of a cult status in Indonesia, Slank fans are known as 'Slankers', and they have a reputation for devotion. They waved their Slank flags, which consist of the word 'Slank' shaped into a graffiti-style butterfly. They sang along with several punk-rock songs and performed a stadium-worthy call-and-response routine.[4] According to one of the guitarists Ridho, "Slankers" span all ages from children to adult.
Trivia

In "Pisah Saja Dulu", vocals were taken at night outside at the house's terrace. The sound of passing cars and zippo clang incidentally recorded to the song and left as is to become an atmospheric ambient.

"Juwita Malam", from the P.L.U.R album, featured in the 2005 film Banyu Biru starring Tora Sudiro. Cast members from the film are seen performing in the song's music video.
Act in The Film

On 2009 Slank was joined in a film that tell about Slank's journey in their music carrer called "Generasi Biru". This film was directed by a famous Indonesian director, Garin Nugroho. For this film Slank have make a single, that is "Slank Dance". This song is contain a unique dance style which created by Slankers.
